I have a website with some dusty ol’ content, including a blog. I was looking at it one day, and I thought… who reads blogs anymore?
Don’t get me wrong, that website paid off. Some random thing I wrote caught the eye of an editor at an Ann Arbor publication. He gave me a chance based on that random thing, and now I’m living the dream — getting paid to write. But that fluke aside, the fact remains: Who goes to someone’s personal website to read their blog?
My hope is that I can use this Substack as a way to share my not-for-work writings, to cultivate and grow a community of readers in a way that doesn’t make me feel like I’m shouting into the void. Money is secondary, always; connections are the most important thing.
What will I write about? Short essays on topics I’m passionate about; stuff I can’t reasonably expect to publish but that still deserves to be written and read. It’ll be updated sporadically. (Another cool thing about Substack — it’s easy [and free!] for readers to subscribe.)
